A microcrystalline variety of quartz within the chalcedony family, famed for its remarkable density and subtle translucency. Formed over millions of years inside ancient volcanic rock cavities, its fine structure makes it exceptionally durable and an ideal canvas for vibrant dye techniques.
Mined since antiquity, from the riverbeds of ancient Sicily to the harsh winds of the Gobi Desert, agate was treasured by Neolithic cultures, Roman engravers, and Renaissance artisans alike. Formed inside freshwater mussels as they layer nacre around a small irritant, each pearl grows slowly over several years, which is why no two are ever quite alike in shape or shine.
