A form of chalcedony, onyx forms in bands within volcanic rock, layers built up slowly as mineral-rich water moves through cavities over time. Deep, solid black is rarely how it occurs naturally; most black onyx sold today is dyed, since true jet-black without any banding or variation is unusual in nature.

Onyx has been carved and worn since antiquity, used by the ancient Greeks and Romans for seals, cameos and protective amulets. Its name comes from the Greek word for "claw" or "fingernail," after the pale banding that resembles one.

Connected to the root chakra, onyx is known as a stone of strength and grounding. It's said to absorb negative energy, steady the emotions, and give the wearer quiet resilience in difficult moments. Solid, dependable and endlessly bold, onyx carries the strength of something unshaken.
