Coral isn't a mineral at all, it's built by tiny marine animals called polyps, which secrete calcium carbonate to form the branching skeletons we recognise as coral, growing slowly over decades. Bamboo coral gets its name from the way it grows: rigid, jointed segments that resemble bamboo stalks, found in deep, cold waters far below where reef coral lives.

Coral has been worn as protection and adornment since antiquity, believed by ancient Romans and various Mediterranean cultures to guard against harm and calm rough seas for sailors and travellers.

Connected to the sacral chakra, coral is known as a stone of vitality and emotional balance. It's said to ground restless energy and encourage a steady, nurturing calm.
